This short story was based off of the painting My Cat, by Keiko Hiratsuka Moore.

Black cat, lying on a patchwork blanket

Sleepily the little cat purrs, pushing his nose into the handmade blankets more. His nose twitches as whiskers hit the patches of the blanket. Snuggling into it once more, he felt his human moving underneath. Waking up slightly his ears move to the sound of rustling. The young human lying in bed whips her legs across the bed, whimpering.

Mewing in annoyance, he almost gets hit right after. Jumping up, he strides up to the tiny human’s head. Bumping it with his nose, it only make them whimper more.

Meowing again in annoyance, the pure black cat jumps off the bed. Sneaking through the bedroom door he heads out into the hall looking for his least favorite mutt.

Plopping down the stairs he searches some of the rooms that she visits frequently. He was first off to the living room. The place where most times, all the humans would be and that dog. She loved to lay and roll around on the couch when they were gone.

He walks over to the couch, peeking over the top. No golden fur insight. Even looking over the entire surface of the gigantic couch, the mutt was nowhere to be seen.

Strutting over to his next destination, he goes to the kitchen.

He could hear his young human still crying. Concerned by the cries, he checked the kitchen even faster. Not seeing the mutt anywhere he runs around the house.

Finally, he makes it into the foyer. Seeing the golden furball asleep by the door, he prances on her. “Get up furball,” the cat nudges her more, “the young human won’t calm down.” That’s what wakes up the sleepy retriever.

Both animals can still hear the cries of their human, as they pounce up the stairs. Pushing the door open, the petite cat jumps up first. He pushes his nose into their hand, nudging it. While the much bigger golden retriever jumps up onto the bed. She almost throws the cat off the bed. She starts to lick her human’s cheek, trying to wake them up.

Soon the cries soften, and their eyes open. The tiny human notices both, cat and dog. Smiling they pet their companions gently, “Thank you, guys,” the human says before falling asleep once more.

The cat meows softly in response, while the golden furball cuddles right into the human’s side. Slightly cold, and jealous the cat hops over and snuggles with the furball, for another night of rest. He really loves his young human.
